MinimServer 2 Release Notes

This page lists all MinimServer 2 and MinimWatch 2 releases and updates. Releases and updates for older versions of MinimServer and MinimWatch are listed on this page. For MinimStreamer releases and updates, see this page.

For each release or update, you'll find a brief description of any new features, together with a summary of bug fixes and other changes.

New features that were added recently are highlighted as [NEW] in the User guide sections that describe them.

MinimServer update 253

This is a bug-fix update for MinimServer 2.2. It was released on 15th July 2024.

This update is enabled for automatic installation when you install or restart MinimServer 2.2.

MinimWatch update 113

This is a bug-fix update for MinimWatch 2.2. It was released on 15th July 2024.

This update is enabled for automatic installation when you install or restart MinimWatch 2.2.

Note: On some versions of Linux with some versions of Java, automatic installation of MinimWatch update 113 might not work. See the next section for what to do if this happens.

Installation notes

This update might not be installed automatically when MinimWatch fails to show a tray icon on a Linux system with GNOME Shell and MinimWatch desktop integration enabled. If you are seeing this, do the following:

Open a Terminal window using Ctrl+Alt+T
From your MinimWatch installation directory, type this command: ./minimwatch/bin/startc
MinimWatch will prompt you to enter a command. Enter these commands: select watch install minimwatch-update-113 relaunch exit
Launch MinimWatch from its application desktop launch icon

MinimServer update 251

This is a feature update for MinimServer 2.2. It was released on 7th June 2024.

New features

Using the Group tag to create multiple groups of tracks with the same group name in an album or album disc is now permitted. For more information, see the Groups and works section of the User guide.

File paths in .m3u or .m3u8 playlist entries can now have directory names separated by either forward slash (/) or backslash (\) characters or a mixture of these. For more information, see the Playlists section of the User guide.

MinimServer update 250

This is a feature update for MinimServer 2.2. It was released on 14th April 2024.

New features

The MinimServer configuration web interface shows the current status of MinimServer (running, starting, stopped or error) on all configuration tabs and pages by changing the favicon colour to green, yellow, white or red when the MinimServer status changes, just like the MinimWatch tray icon.

The status tab of the configuration web interface updates automatically in real time to show the current status (Starting, Running, Stopped, Error, Rescanning, Restarting or Relaunching) as well as the last rescan time and content directory setting without the need to manually refresh or reload the page.

Resources used by the configuration web pages (icons, scripts, etc.) are cached by the web browser, making page reload and refresh times quicker.

A local cache is now used for information about MinimServer updates and new versions. This reduces the load on the updates server caused by frequently resending information that has not changed. This change means that information about a new version or update might not be shown for up to an hour after the new version or update has been released.

MinimServer uses secure HTTP connections (SSL/TLS) to the online updates server wherever possible when checking for and installing MinimServer updates and new versions.

MinimWatch update 112

This is a feature update for MinimWatch 2.2. It was released on 10th April 2024.

This update is enabled for automatic installation when you install or restart MinimWatch 2.2.

New features

A local cache is now used for information about MinimServer and MinimWatch updates and new versions. This reduces the load on the updates server caused by frequently resending information that has not changed. This change means that information about a new version or update might not be shown for up to an hour after the new version or update has been released.

MinimWatch uses secure HTTP connections (SSL/TLS) to the online updates server wherever possible when checking for and installing MinimServer and MinimWatch updates and new versions.

Minor changes

Fix limitation in some versions of Java that can prevent showing tray icon in GNOME Shell

MinimServer update 248

This is an important bug-fix update for MinimServer 2.2. It was released on 12th March 2024. It fixes a problem that prevents installing updates and activating/deactivating the license on some NAS models and firmware versions.

Installation notes

Note: Some older versions of Java installed on some Synology and QNAP devices have a limitation that prevents MinimServer from installing this update if the current MinimServer update level is between update 241 and update 247 inclusive. This problem affects Synology devices that are running DSM 6.x, DSM 5.x or DSM 4.x and have an Intel or PowerPC processor. It also affects QNAP models TS-109, TS-209 and TS-409.

To check whether your MinimServer installation is affected by this problem, open the MinimServer configuration web page in a web browser. If there is an error message at the top of the page saying "Resource not available: https://minimworld.com/updates/minimserver-2.2.jmupd", this means your MinimServer installation is affected by this problem and you need to install update 248 (or later) manually as described in one of the following sections.

Installing update 248 (or later) using MinimWatch

If you have MinimWatch running on another computer on your home network, you can use MinimWatch to install update 248 (or later) on your NAS by following the steps in this section. If you don't use MinimWatch, follow the instructions in one of the following sections.

Stop and restart MinimWatch. You should see a pop-up informing you that update 248 (or later) is available and offering you the option to install this update. Follow the prompts to install the update and relaunch MinimServer.
If you don't see this pop-up, select About from the minim icon in the taskbar, then click 'Show Updates'.
You should see update 248 (or later) as an available update. Select this, click the Install button and follow the prompts to install the update and relaunch MinimServer.
Future updates will be installed automatically in the usual way.

Installing update 248 (or later) on Synology DSM 6/5/4 with an Intel or PowerPC processor

Follow the instructions in this section if your Synology NAS is running DSM 6.x, DSM 5.x or DSM 4.x and has an Intel or PowerPC processor (see this section) and your current MinimServer update level is between update 241 and update 247 inclusive.
In Synology DSM Package Center, stop MinimServer.
If you have a MinimServer full license activated for this NAS, use Synology DSM File Station to open the shared folder MinimServer/appData and delete the file minimserver.config. Be careful not to delete any other files.
In DSM Package Center, uninstall MinimServer and make sure you select the option to backup the configuration files.
In DSM Package Center, install MinimServer. MinimServer will restart with your previous configuration settings and will automatically install update 248 (or later).
Future updates will be installed automatically in the usual way.

Installing update 248 (or later) on QNAP TS-109, TS-209 or TS-409

Follow the instructions in this section if MinimServer is running on a QNAP TS-109, TS-209 or TS-409 and your current MinimServer update level is between update 241 and update 247 inclusive.
On the QPKG Plugins page, remove the MinimServer package. This will not remove your MinimServer configuration settings or your full license activation if applicable.
On the MinimServer 2 Downloads page, find the QNAP row in the table of MinimServer downloads and click the download link for ARMv5. Accept the license and download the package file. The downloaded file is named MinimServer-2.2-armv5.qpkg.
Use the QPKG Plugins page to manually install this .qpkg file. Check that the MinimServer package is enabled (the icon should be green, not grey).
MinimServer will restart with your previous configuration settings and will automatically install update 248 (or later).
Future updates will be installed automatically in the usual way.

MinimServer update 247

This is a bug-fix update for MinimServer 2.2. It was released on 5th January 2024.

MinimServer update 246

This is a feature update for MinimServer 2.2. It was released on 11th December 2023.

New features

MinimServer now enables UPnP control points to request extended metadata from tags in audio files as well as standard DIDL-Lite metadata properties defined by the UPnP specification. For example, a control point can now obtain values for tags such as Work, Movement, Grouping and DiscNumber that don't correspond to standard UPnP properties. For more information, see the Extended metadata section of the User guide.

The displayFormat option of the tagFormat property now supports removing values from the metadata information sent to the control point. For example, this allows the genre to be removed ftom track information shown by the control point while retaining Genre as an index selection. For more information, see the Tag formatting section of the User guide.

This is a feature update for MinimServer 2.2. It was released on 30th October 2023.

New features

If Rating is specified in indexTags or itemTags, Rating tags in library files are sent to the control point as <upnp:rating> metadata properties.

All Unicode characters can now be used in MinimServer property values on all platforms. Property values on Windows were previously limited to the Windows-1252 character set.

When running MinimServer on a QNAP NAS, you can configure some MinimServer startup options by creating a minimstart.conf file. See the final paragraphs of this section for details of what can be specified in this file.

This is a major release for MinimServer. It was released on 21st December 2022.

New features

MinimServer 2.2 provides major extensions to the configuration web interface, aimed at making MinimServer easier for users to install and configure.

The trial and full licenses now enable additional default settings "out of the box." Users can view and customize these settings (and all other MinimServer and MinimStreamer properties) from the configuration web page without needing to install and run MinimWatch.

MinimServer 2.2 can be installed using a "one click" button from an existing 2.1 installation without using MinimWatch (requires MinimServer update 219 or later). MinimStreamer can be installed using a "one click" button from MinimServer 2.2, again without using MinimWatch.

If you have previously taken a trial with an earlier version of MinimServer and this trial has expired, updating to MinimServer 2.2 resets this expiry so that you can start a new free 30-day trial to experience the changes in MinimServer 2.2.

Compatibility notes

If you are running MinimServer with a full license and your updates license entitlement expired before 19th December 2022, you cannot install MinimServer 2.2 with a full license active. If you try to install MinimServer 2.2 using the Install button on the MinimServer configuration page, you will see a message telling you that your MinimServer updates license has expired.

This is a bug-fix release for MinimWatch 2.1. It was released on 25th October 2022.

MinimServer 2.1.2-2107 for Synology DSM 7

This is a bug-fix release for MinimServer 2.1.2 on Synology DSM 7. It was released on 23rd August 2022.

This release is available for manual download only. When installed, it checks for incorrect user ownership of the MinimServer license files and fixes this if necessary.

If MinimServer 2.1.2 is installed and running correctly, you don't need to install this version. The only difference in 2.1.2-2107 is the check for incorrect file ownership.

MinimServer 2.1.2 for QNAP

This version replaces the previous MinimServer 2.1 release for QNAP that was released for manual download on 14th December 2021. It includes all updates up to and including update 213. It was released on 27th June 2022.

The downloads for Intel, ARMv8 and ARMv7 are identical to the corresponding MinimServer 2.1.2 versions available from the QNAP App Center. In addition, there is an ARMv5 download for manual installation on QNAP ARMv5 models.

If your QNAP NAS already has MinimServer 2.1 installed with update 213 or later, you don't need to install this version.

MinimServer 2.1.2-2103 for Synology DSM 7

This is a bug-fix release for MinimServer 2.1.2 on Synology DSM 7. It was released on 18th June 2022.

This release is available for manual download only. When installed, it checks for incorrect file permissions in the MinimServer installation and fixes any incorrect permissions that it finds.

If MinimServer 2.1.2-2102 is installed and running correctly, you don't need to install this version. The only difference in 2.1.2-2103 is the check for incorrect file permissions.

This is a bug-fix update for MinimServer 2.1. It was released on 10th June 2022.

This is the first version of MinimServer 2.1 to be available from the Synology Package Center. You can install it from the Package Center on any Synology NAS with an Intel, ARMv8, ARMv7 or ARMv5 processor running DSM 6.2 or DSM 7.

This version includes all updates up to and including update 213. It was released on 6th April 2022.

Compatibility notes

MinimServer 2.0.19 for QNAP

The indexArtwork option now shows images for almost all index entries including the letter indexes shown by the alphaGroup option and index entries such as Composer and '>> Show All'.

To provide better support for the common case of organising your library into artist folders and album subfolders, browsing using folder view with indexArtwork=auto now looks for artwork in the folder shown in the index and also in its subfolders. This enables the artist folder index entry to show an image from one of the album subfolders.

The limit of 65000 folders in a MinimServer library has been removed. The number of folders is now unlimited. The number of files is also unlimited, as it was previously.

Reverting MinimServer to an older version or update level no longer invalidates the cache. Previously, the cache was rebuilt using a full rescan when an older version or update level was installed. This has been changed so that the cache remains valid if it is compatible with the older version.

Until now, MinimServer has displayed artwork for albums, tracks, groups, playlists and folders, with no artwork for index selection entries such as artist and composer names. You can now enable artwork images for index selection entries. These images can either be selected automatically by MinimServer or customised by the user. The new showAllDiscs option of the serverOptions property allows you to prevent the merging of tracks from multiple discs of the same album into a single combined list. For more information, see the Show all discs section.

Compatibility notes

MinimServer update 172 uses a different license file format than update 162 and earlier versions. This isn't a problem when you install update 172 because your license file will be migrated automatically to the new format.

If your license file has been migrated and you later remove update 172 to revert to an older version of MinimServer 2, you might get a license file format error message. If this happens, you need to reactivate your license using the License tab of the MinimServer configuration web page.

MinimServer 2.0.16 for ASUSTOR and NETGEAR ReadyNAS

This is a new platform release for MinimServer 2. It was released on 8th October 2020.

New platforms

MinimServer 2.0.16 is the first release of MinimServer 2 for ASUSTOR and NETGEAR ReadyNAS. It supports all ASUSTOR models and some older ReadyNAS models (NV+ v2, Duo v2, Ultra, Pro and NVX).

If you want to run MinimStreamer with MinimServer 2.0.15, you need MinimStreamer 2.0.4 or later.

On Linux with desktop integration, the MinimServer launch icon is now in the applications start menu instead of on the desktop. If multiple instances of MinimServer are installed, this launch icon starts all instances that have desktop integration enabled.

When running multiple instances of MinimServer, MinimServer automatically selects alternative available ports if the default ports are in use by another instance of MinimServer.

When running multiple instances of MinimServer, MinimServer uses a unique default display name for each instance.

On Linux with desktop integration, MinimServer prompts the user to select the initial content directory instead of stopping with an error message and red icon.

On Linux, MinimServer defaults to ~/Music or /Music as the content directory if the user couldn't be prompted or didn't make a selection when prompted.

Activating or deactivating a full license in the configuration web interface shows how many full license activations are currently in use.

MinimServer 2.0.12 supports translation (localization) of all user interface elements that can be displayed in a UPnP control point. There are built-in translations for a number of languages and you can customize the built-in translations and add translations for new languages. The serverOptions property has a new option language to change the user interface language. By default, the user interface language is the language setting of the device you are using to run MinimServer. For more information, see the Language section.

Changes from MinimServer 0.8.5

MinimServer 2 has been notarized by Apple to confirm that it does not contain malicious software. This makes the installation process simpler. For more information, see the Installing or updating MinimServer on Mac section.

MinimServer 2 for Mac supports all versions of Java from Java 8 onwards, including Java 11 and Java 14. Previoua versions of MinimServer were limited to Java 8 only.

When you first start MinimServer 2 after upgrading from MinimServer 0.8.5, some of your property settings from MinimServer 0.8.5 might not be available until you have activated either a trial license or a full license.

When you first start MinimServer 2 after upgrading from MinimServer 0.8.5, MinimStreamer will not be installed. If you want to use MinimStreamer, you need to activate a trial license or a full license and then use MinimWatch 2 to install MinimStreamer 2 from the Packages tab of the Properties window. Your previous MinimStreamer property settings will be migrated automatically.

Changes from MinimServer 0.8.5

MinimServer 2 creates a 'MinimServer' shared folder for log files and configuration files. This folder is not intended to be used to store your music library. This change means that MinimServer no longer creates or uses any files in the Public share of your NAS.

The 'MinimServer' shared folder is now used for MinimStreamer recordings and for installing a custom version of FFmpeg if you want to override the preinstalled version in QTS.

This is a bug-fix release for MinimServer 2. It was released on 25th March 2020. To update to this release from a previous version, use Version Check on the Melco front panel.

Bug fixes

In some cases, an error while installing, starting or stopping MinimServer on the Melco can put the MinimServer installation into a state where MinimServer cannot be started, stopped or reinstalled. In MinimServer 2.0.8, any such error causes MinimServer to be uninstalled automatically. This enables the user to reinstall MinimServer when the cause of the error has been resolved.
