The following sections describe how to do a new installation of MinimServer on your QNAP NAS. To update an existing MinimServer installation, see the Updating MinimServer section.

MinimServer is written in Java and requires the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to be installed before you can install and run MinimServer. The instructions in the following sections show you how to update Java to the latest level as well as how to install MinimServer.

For models with Intel processors (model numbers 239, 251, 253, 259, 269, 400, 411, 439, 451, 453, 459, 469, 470, 509, 559, 569, 639, 651, 653, 659, 669, 670, 809, 839, 851, 853, 859, 869, 870, 879, 880, 1079, 1269, 1270, 1279, 1280, 1679, 1680, 1879, 2479 and 2480), follow the steps in the Installing MinimServer (Intel models) section.

For models with ARMv5 processors (model numbers 110, 112, 119, 120, 121, 131, 210, 212, 219, 220, 221, 231 [not 231+], 410, 412, 419, 420, 421 and 431 [not 431+]) follow the steps in the Installing MinimServer (ARMv5 models) section.

For x09 models (model numbers 109, 209 and 409), follow the steps in the Installing MinimServer (x09 models) section.

Installing MinimServer (Intel models)

  1. Check the model number of your QNAP NAS. The installation steps in this section apply to models with an Intel processor, as follows: 239, 251, 253, 259, 269, 400, 411, 439, 451, 453, 459, 469, 470, 509, 559, 569, 639, 651, 653, 659, 669, 670, 809, 839, 851, 853, 859, 869, 870, 879, 880, 1079, 1269, 1270, 1279, 1280, 1679, 1680, 1879, 2479 and 2480.
  2. Login to the QNAP administration user interface.
  3. Open the QPKG Center page. If a package named JRE is already installed and the version number is less than 8.6.0, remove this package and follow steps 4 and 5 below to reinstall Java. If there's a JRE package with a version number of 8.6.0 or higher, make sure the package is enabled (the icon should be orange, not grey) and continue with step 6 below.
  4. Download the file JRE_8.6.0_x86.zip and extract the file JRE_8.6.0_x86.qpkg from the .zip file.
  5. From the QPKG Center page, manually install the JRE .qpkg file that you extracted in the previous step. The version number of the package should be 8.6.0. Check that the JRE package is enabled (the icon should be orange, not grey).
  6. From the Downloads page, download the file MinimServer-0.8.5.2-intel.qpkg and use the QPKG Center page to manually install this .qpkg file. Check that the MinimServer package is enabled (the icon should be green, not grey).
  7. Click the "Web page" link for the MinimServer package. The MinimServer Status page should be displayed in your web browser. For additional information on setting up MinimServer, see the Setting up MinimServer section.

Installing MinimServer (x09 models)

  1. Check the model number of your QNAP NAS. The installation steps in this section apply only to models 109, 209 and 409.
  2. Login to the QNAP administration user interface.
  3. Open the QPKG Center page. If a package named JRE or JRE_ARM is already installed and the version number is less than 8.0.1, remove this package and follow steps 4 and 5 below to reinstall Java. If there's a JRE_ARM package with a version number of 8.0.1 or higher, make sure the package is enabled (the icon should be orange, not grey) and continue with step 6 below.
  4. Download the file JRE_ARM_8.0.1.zip and extract the file JRE_ARM_8.0.1.qpkg from the .zip file.

  8. Click the "Web page" link for the MinimServer package. The MinimServer Status page should be displayed in your web browser. For additional information on setting up MinimServer, see the Setting up MinimServer section.

Setting up MinimServer

  1. If you've followed the above installation steps for Java and MinimServer successfully, the MinimServer Status page should be displayed in your web browser and you should be able to see MinimServer as a UPnP server from a UPnP control point. If not, go to "System Logs" from the QNAP administration page and check whether there's an error message from MinimServer. If the system log doesn't show any MinimServer errors, see the Startup problems section for further suggestions.
  2. The QPKG installer sets the initial content directory to /share/Multimedia or /share/Qmultimedia, depending on your model of QNAP NAS. The content directory is the top-level directory that contains your music files. If the default setting matches the location of your music library, you should be able to browse and play the contents of your music library in a UPnP control point.
  3. If your music files are in some other location, you can use the MinimServer Status page in your web browser to enter a different content directory location and click the Update button to activate this setting.
  4. If you want to install the latest MinimServer updates, add more content directories or change MinimServer configuration settings, you'll need to install MinimWatch on another computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) on your local network. Installing MinimWatch also allows you to monitor the status of MinimServer and view the MinimServer log. You can find instructions for installing MinimWatch on the Installing page.
  5. After installing MinimWatch, it's a good idea to check the MinimServer log to see if there are any warning or error messages about problems found by MinimServer while scanning your music files. To do this, right-click the MinimWatch minim icon and select "Show log". A warning in the log means that MinimServer has found something wrong with a file, but has been able to read the file and make it available for browsing and playing. An error in the log means that MinimServer wasn't able to read the file. If you see a message you don't understand, you can get help by creating a new thread in the MinimServer support forum as described on the Support page.
  6. MinimServer will continue to run while the NAS is powered on, and it will restart automatically when the NAS is restarted.
  7. You can disable MinimServer from the QPKG Center page. This stops MinimServer immediately and prevents MinimServer from starting when the NAS is restarted. MinimServer is still installed on the NAS, and you can re-enable it at any time from the QPKG Center page. When you disable MinimServer, an archive containing diagnostic information is saved automatically as the file minimserver-diag.tar.gz in the Public share of the QNAP NAS.

Startup problems

If you can't see MinimServer in a UPnP control point after it's been installed and enabled, here are some suggestions that may be helpful.
  1. Disable MinimServer from the QPKG Center page, then re-enable MinimServer.
  2. If MinimServer still isn't running, leave MinimServer enabled and restart the NAS.
  3. If MinimServer still isn't running, install MinimWatch on another computer in your local network and start MinimWatch. If MinimServer has encountered an error while starting, you should see a red minim icon with a pop-up message describing the startup error. You may be able to get more information about the error by selecting "Show log" from the minim icon.
  4. If the MinimWatch minim icon is grey, please submit a problem report as described on the Support page. When describing the problem, please say which of the above steps you have tried and what the results were.
